What is Botox?

Botox is actually the brand name for a neurotoxin
called Botulinum toxin type A.

Because it was the first of its kind approved by the FDA, Botox has come to refer to any kind of toxin used to treat signs of aging in the face, as well as several other medical conditions, such as migraines. At Audubon Facial Plastic Surgery in New Orleans Botox and Dysport are both neurotoxins that we offer. As we age, constant use of the muscles of the forehead from frowning, squinting, brow elevation, or smiling can lead to visible deep lines and wrinkles. Botox and Dysport both block the nerves to these muscles, causing a relaxed appearance to the facial skin. Relaxing the muscles causes the skin lines and wrinkles to smooth.

Benefits of Botox

Effective at treating crows feet

At Audubon Facial Plastic Surgery in New Orleans Botox and Dysport are best known for treating the upper half of the face in order to diminish lines and wrinkles. They work by targeting the nerves that control certain muscle groups in the face and paralyzing or weakening them. They are effective at treating crow’s feet, lines between the eyebrows sometimes known as the “elevens”, wrinkles on the forehead, and “bunny” lines on the nose. They can also address platysmal banding in the neck, dimpling of the chin, and enlarged masseter muscles.

Am I a Candidate for Botox in New Orleans?

Botox and Dysport are currently approved for anyone who would like to reduce lines and wrinkles in their face. Ideal candidates should not be pregnant or nursing. To find out more, schedule a consultation with Dr. Melancon, where she will develop a personalized plan for you.

Neuromodulators vs. Dermal Fillers

Neuromodulators, such as Dysport, Botox, and Xeomin, are derived from botulinum toxin type A.

Neuromodulators block nerve signals to muscles, causing temporary muscle relaxation. By inhibiting the release of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter responsible for muscle contraction, they can smooth out wrinkles and fine lines resulting from repetitive muscle movements. In contrast to Botox, dermal fillers are substances injected into specific areas of the face to add volume and fullness. The most commonly used dermal filler is hyaluronic acid (HA), which naturally occurs in the body and provides hydration and plumpness to the skin.

The benefits of neuromodulators include:

  • Preventing wrinkles from forming
  • Increasing the skin’s firmness and elasticity
  • Lifting sagging areas of the face
  • Improving the appearance of facial lines and wrinkles
  • Reducing excessive sweating

The benefits of dermal fillers include:

  • Adding volume and fullness
  • Softening of wrinkles
  • Rehydrating the skin
  • Minimizing the appearance of scars
  • Improving facial contours and structure

Recovery from Botox

Recovery after injections is very straightforward, and there is no downtime.

However, you should avoid vigorous exercise or physical strain for 24-48 hours after injection in order to prevent migration of the Botox or Dysport.

Results from Botox

Any bruises you get should fade within a week, and you can cover them with makeup if needed.

After receiving Botox New Orleans patients will begin to see results at three to five days after injection. Dysport has a slightly quicker onset. For both Botox and Dysport, you will not see final results for seven to 10 days. Results should last on average about three to four months depending on the amount of neurotoxin that you received.

The Botox Procedure

Botox and Dysport injections are both performed in the office

Topical numbing medication is offered for your comfort, should you prefer. During the actual procedure, Dr. Melancon will administer the injections directly into the muscle group(s) responsible for the targeted areas. Afterward, you will be given an ice pack to help with discomfort and swelling.

It is important that if you are considering receiving Botox or Dysport, you do not take any aspirin or ibuprofen products the week prior in order to prevent bruising. Also, if you are taking any blood thinners, you should be aware that you will likely bruise more than normal.

Botox FAQ

We use a very fine needle for the injections to minimize discomfort. Most patients describe the sensation as a small pinch.

Patients may have dull headaches or pain in the face in the area where the injections were given. There may also be tenderness, bruising, swelling, redness, bleeding, inflammation, or infection. These are not experienced by every patient. Discuss the risks of Botox injections with your injector.

Generally speaking, results from Botox injections last three to four months. You can also lengthen this time with touch-up injections.

The cost of Botox will vary depending on what areas and how many areas you have treated. Some areas of the face require more units of Botox or Dysport than others. More exact pricing will be discussed during your consultation.

No, these injections are not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women. Because of the lack of research, it’s best to wait until you are no longer pregnant or finished with breastfeeding before you pursue treatment.

Waiting 24 hours before applying makeup or lotion after receiving the injections is recommended. When you apply makeup after the treatment, use clean brushes and apply your products gently.

Many agree that patients in their mid to late 20s or 30s are at the ideal age for preventative neuromodulator treatments. However, getting a head start to prevent the issue before it appears is always beneficial.

Botox can be combined with other facial treatments, such as dermal fillers and laser treatments, for an overall rejuvenated look. During your consultation, we can discuss what combinations may be in your best interest to tackle your aesthetic goals.
